What is Male Megalomastia – Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia (Male Megalomastia) is characterized by an increase in the size of male breasts due to hypertrophy and hyperplasia of the mass tissue or adipose tissue (false gynecomastia) or both. It occurs in both adolescents and adults and usually causes problems with low self-esteem and self-confidence.

Causes of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia can occur in adolescents or adults and can be due to a number of factors. The most common causes are: 

  • Hormonal disorder: It is due to disturbed levels of testosterone and estrogen that cause a swollen male breast.
  • Lipomastia: It is the case that mastitis occurs after large changes in the patient’s weight.
  • Use of substances: In recent years, the number of cases where Megalomastia occurs due to extensive use of anabolic steroids has increased.
  • Idiopathic Gynecomastia: These are the cases where none of the above causes is identified.
